ossenzijl owes its name to the osse family who managed a lock (=zijl). the lock is no longer used, but the kalenbergergracht is still an important through shipping route, but now for pleasure boats to and from the overijssel and frisian lakes.
ossenzijl is part of the municipality of steenwijkerland and is easily accessible both by water and by road (a32/a6). it is about 60 car minutes from the randstad, 10 car minutes from the city of steenwijk and wolvega and a few car minutes from oldemarkt. oldemarkt has a center function for the area. here you will find a good range of stores and also numerous cultural and sports facilities.
